  8. 德国MP-18冲锋枪结构剖视图 分解的德国MP-18I冲锋枪 中国德式师和其他主力师的制式冲锋枪MP18I! MP18系列是世界上第一种可供单兵使用的冲锋枪是由德国工程师雨果·斯麦塞尔于1918年研制成功的,由伯格曼公司试生产,所以称为伯格曼MP18冲锋枪。后来,斯麦塞尔又对MPIS型冲锋枪进行了改进,投入批量生产,命名为MP18I 型冲锋枪,但此时第一次世界大战已近尾声,就是这样,到第一次世界大战结束时,德国前线仍装备了35000 支MP18I 型冲锋枪,每个连有6 名冲锋枪手。所以,MP18I 成为世界上第一种被大量装备并广泛用于实战的冲锋枪。 MP181 首次采用了自由枪机式自动原理,从而为简化结构、减轻重量找到了最有效的技术途径。与机枪、步枪相比,该枪具有长度短、重量轻、火力猛、适用于近战等优点。其结构简单,性能可靠,发射9 毫米巴拉贝鲁姆手枪弹,弹匣容量32发。由于没有专门的保险机构,该枪只能连发,理论射速达400 发/分。该枪发射的9 毫米巴拉贝鲁姆手枪弹初速381 米/秒,有效射程200 米。 MP18I 及MP18的外型和结构为冲锋枪奠定了基本式样。以MP18I 为例,其枪长815 毫米,不装弹时枪重4l公斤。此后,美国、意大利、奥地利、西班牙等国均模仿MP18I ,研制出与MP18I 大同小异的本国冲锋枪。可以这样说,MP18I 对冲锋枪的发展产生了久远而深刻的影响。第一次世界大战结束后签订的《凡尔赛和约》因此明文规定:德国不允许再装备MP18I 冲锋枪,由此,足可见该枪当时的影响。
